Revised EU Action Plan to End Wildlife Trafficking

At the beginning of November 2022, the Commission adopted a revised EU Action Plan to put an end to illegal wildlife trade, as announced in the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. It directs the EU efforts in combating wildlife trafficking until 2027 and addresses four main priorities.

OLAF Recommended Recovery of €19.5 Million Fraudulently Acquired in Water Projects

In November 2022, OLAF concluded investigations into fraud and irregularities in relation to several water infrastructure and wastewater modernisation projects. Two cases played in Bulgaria, one in Romania, and one in Hungary. In total, OLAF recommended the recovery of over €19.5 million.

Statewatch Report on New Europol Mandate

Under the title "Empowering the police, removing protection", the NGO Statewatch published a report which scrutinizes Europol's new role under the amended Europol Regulation which entered into force end of June 2022. Despite efforts to address criticism of its activities, financial and personal management, and transparency policy, Frontex was unable to convince MEPs to take a favourable discharge decision on Frontex's 2020 accounts. MEPs refused the discharge on 18 October 2022, arguing, inter alia, that there are still structural problems which must be solved.
