The ECBA will hold its autumn conference on 1 and 2 October 2021 in Berlin. The conference is supported by the German Federal Bar (Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer - BRAK) and the Criminal Law Working Group of the German Bar Association (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Strafrecht des Deutscher Anwaltverein). The title of the Conference is: “EPPO meets European Defence: striving for the highest standard of fair proceedings in Europe”.

Organised within the framework of the EU-CoE project ‘HELP Radicalisation prevention, Judicial response to terrorism and international cooperation in criminal matters on 20 & 21 October 2021, the Conference will provide a unique opportunity for justice professionals (judges, prosecutors, lawyers, security forces, prison and probation officers, policymakers) to exchange experiences and best practices on these subjects, with a multi-agency and transnational approach.

The pandemic has accelerated the adoption of remote working. It has become evident during the COVID-19 pandemic that remote working has many positive aspects, such as greater flexibility and more autonomy. It does come, however, with a series of challenges such as organising working time, the right to disconnect, or reconciling professional and personal life, which affects gender equality greatly. The lunch-time debate aims at presenting an insight into the state of play regarding procedural rights in the EU and discussing the need for further measures. Looking at European criminal justice, for many years, the political focus has been on security issues with numerous measures taken to enhance police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters.
