The main objective of this seminar is to train EU legal practitioners on the fundamentals of computer forensics enabling them to gain an understanding of the complex challenges related to criminal cases with tech/internet components. This event will focus on dark web investigations.

As a result of online investigations, criminal courts are confronted with the question of whether electronic evidence presented in criminal proceedings is admissible. Rules governing the admissibility of electronic evidence vary in the legal frameworks of different Member States, and are continuously challenged by the evolution of digital devices.

In a context of strong globalization and the emergence of new technologies, crime has evolved adopting new forms of delinquency, taking place in different contexts, and involving the activity of criminals technically more gifted, up-to-date, and increasingly organized in a reticulated structure. In response to this trend, criminal investigation as well as academic research on criminal phenomena call for new methods and techniques.

At this conference, legal practitioners will exchange on current developments and future initiatives in the field of EU criminal justice. This year’s event will discuss the impact of artificial intelligence and the Metaverse on the criminal justice system.

This online summer course over five half-days will introduce legal practitioners to practical aspects of European criminal justice.

After explaining the technical aspects of AI and its implications for privacy-preserving big data technologies, this conference will focus on how AI could be used in criminal proceedings, enabling the shift from a traditionally reactive approach to crime-fighting to one that is more proactive and preventative in character. It will discuss possible solutions for remedying the risks posed by AI and robotics in the criminal justice domain.

This hybrid seminar will analyse the practical issues faced by police and criminal justice authorities in protecting individuals’ personal data when it is being processed, including under the terms of the EU Law Enforcement Directive. It will also look at how they can improve cooperation in the fight against terrorism and cross-border crime in the EU through the exchange of information required for investigations, including with third countries.

This hybrid seminar will address the current European anti-money laundering landscape and focus on the changes implemented since the adoption of the fourth, fifth and sixth Anti-Money Laundering Directives and the new Directive on enhancing FIU cooperation and access to financial information.

During this seminar, participants will obtain more insight into the EU legislation in the field, national legal responses, investigation techniques (in particular social media open-source investigations) and victim assistance.
