This year's Summer School will be centered on the wider and ever-increasing role of EU actors in criminal law, analysed from different angles in order to provide a well-rounded understanding of the complexities of this evolving field. The objective of the Summer School is to provide participants with an extensive knowledge of EU criminal law. The classes are both theoretical and practical.

With a view to foster deeper reflection on proportionality of penalties at the EU level, the conference gathers key experts in the field for a discussion on the principle’s theorisation and place in the EU legal order, as well as on its impact on Member States’ criminal systems.

The Brussels Privacy Hub Summer Academy for Global Privacy Law 2023 will focus on the topic “From Data Access to Data Transformations: How to Govern Data in the Age of Analytics and AI?”. This webinar delves into topics of digital investigations. It will deal with the tensions between the increased need for effective inestigations in the cyberworld and the need for control on these investigation in order to ensure fundamental rights protection.

The overall objective of this year’s Eclan Conference is to assess the existing EU instruments for the protection of victims’ rights and to ponder future prospects. To this purpose, cross-cutting aspects of victims’ rights will be highlighted while focusing on several issues that have been identified as the most pressing. This short course will explore some of the many ways in which international law and institutions have been asked to address elements of the conflict including State responsibility, accountability for human rights abuses, individual criminal accountability, and economic concerns.

The course will consider how the digital environment and human rights intersect and discuss the advancement of human rights in the digital age. It examines the challenges to the promotion and realisation of rights as it applies to the emergence of digital technologies, therefore, it discusses issues pertaining to human rights and their protection in the use of digital technologies.
