The ECBA will hold its autumn conference on 1 and 2 October 2021 in Berlin. The conference is supported by the German Federal Bar (Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer - BRAK) and the Criminal Law Working Group of the German Bar Association (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Strafrecht des Deutscher Anwaltverein). The title of the Conference is: “EPPO meets European Defence: striving for the highest standard of fair proceedings in Europe”.

A webinar discussed the possible need for further procedural rights in the EU. Two distinguished defence lawyers active in the ECBA guided participants through the ideas on the future development and assessment of procedural rights in criminal proceedings. Participants mainly discussed the future EU path in the areas of pre-trial detention and the EAW, minimum standards in trials, and admissibility/exclusion of evidence. The debate contributed to the Conference on the Future of Europe.

Organised within the framework of the EU-CoE project ‘HELP Radicalisation prevention, Judicial response to terrorism and international cooperation in criminal matters on 20 & 21 October 2021, the Conference will provide a unique opportunity for justice professionals (judges, prosecutors, lawyers, security forces, prison and probation officers, policymakers) to exchange experiences and best practices on these subjects, with a multi-agency and transnational approach.
