Social Media Platforms Launched

On 28 April 2022, the EDPS launched a pilot phase of two social media platforms named EU Voice and EU Video.

While EU Voice is offering an official ActivityPub microblogging platform, EU Video is offering an official ActivityPub video platform of the EU institutions, bodies and agencies (EUIs). EU institutions, bodies and agencies contributing to the platforms include the EDPS, the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU), the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), and many more.

Both platforms aim at offering alternative solutions to other social media platforms giving priority to the users’ rights to privacy and data protection. Hence, the platforms are based on several alternative procedures. For instance, they do not rely on transfers of personal data to countries outside the European Union and the European Economic Area, there are no advertisements on the platforms, and there is no profiling of individuals who may use the platforms.
