Report on Malicious Uses and Abuses of Artificial Intelligence
On 19 November 2020, Europol, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), and Trend Micro (an IT company providing cybersecurity solutions) published a joint report on “Malicious Uses and Abuses of Artificial Intelligence (AI)”. Looking at the present state and possible future scenarios of malicious uses and abuses of AI, the report identifies a strong need to harness the potential of AI technology as a crime-fighting tool in order to future-proof the cybersecurity industry and cybersecurity policing. Furthermore, it recommends further research in order to stimulate the development of defensive technology and to promote and develop secure AI design frameworks. Politically loaded rhetoric on the use of AI for cybersecurity purposes should be de-escalated. Lastly, public-private partnerships should be leveraged and multidisciplinary expert groups established.
