On 26 March 2025, in view of the terms of twenty-six judges expiring on 31 August 2025, representatives of the governments of the EU Member States appointed thirteen judges to the General Court of the EU as part of a partial renewal.

For the remainder of the term of office until 31 August 2025:

  • Rimvydas Norkus was appointed as Advocate-General to the Court of Justice and succeeded by Danute Jočienė (Lithuania) as judge to the General Court.
  • Fredrik Schalin was appointed judge to the Court of Justice and succeeded by Jörgen Hettne (Sweden) as judge to the General Court.

For the period from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2031, the following appointments and renewals were made:

  • Two judges, Francesco Bestagno (Italy) and Tanja Pavelin (Croatia) were appointed for a first term of office.
  • The terms of office of nine judges were renewed, namely Hervé Cassagnabère (France), Saulius Lukas Kalėda (Lithuania), Ulf Öberg (Sweden), Tamara Perišin (Croatia), David Petrlík (Czechia), Inga Reine (Latvia), Petra Škvařilová-Pelzl (Czechia), Laurent Truchot (France), and Pēteris Zilgalvis (Latvia).

The judges of the General Court are appointed by common accord of the governments of the Member States after consultation of a panel responsible for giving an opinion on prospective candidates' suitability to perform the duties concerned. They are chosen from among individuals whose independence is beyond doubt and candidates for the General Court must possess the ability required for appointment to high judicial office in their country.
