Partial Renewal of Members and Chambers of the General Court

Following the partial renewal of the Members of the General Court, the representatives of the governments of the Member States of the EU renewed the terms of office of 19 judges of the General Court (Suzanne Kingston, Colm Mac Eochaidh, José Martín y Pérez de Nanclares, Miguel Sampol Pucurull, Hervé Cassagnabère, Saulius Lukas Kalėda, Ulf Öberg, Tamara Perišin, David Petrlík, Inga Reine, Petra Škvařilová-Pelzl, Laurent Truchot, Pēteris Zilgalvis, Maja Brkan, Jörgen Hettne, Danutė Jočienė, Damjan Kukovec, Johannes Laitenberger, and Gabriele Steinfatt) for the period from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2031. Furthermore Tanja Pavelin, Francesco Bestagno, and Raffaella Pezzuto were appointed as Judges at the General Court, replacing Vesna Tomljenović, Roberto Mastroianni, and Ornella Porchia.

Marc van der Woude was re-elected by his peers to serve as President of the General Court of the EU for the period from 16 September 2025 to 31 August 2028. Mr van der Woude was appointed Judge at the General Court in 2010. He was first elected President of the General Court in 2019 and has served in that capacity since.

Savvas Papasavvas was also re-elected Vice-President of the General Court of the EU. He was appointed Judge of the General Court in 2004 and first elected Vice-President in 2019.

Furthermore, the Judges of the General Court elected two judges to perform the duties of Advocate General when dealing with requests for a preliminary ruling: Maja Brkan and José Martín y Pérez de Nanclares.

Finally, with regard to its Chambers, the General Court amended the following decisions and elected the Presidents of the Chambers from among their ranks:

  • The decision on the formation of Chambers and the assignment of judges to Chambers;
  • The decision on the composition of the Grand Chamber and the Intermediate Chamber;
  • The decision on the criteria for allocation to Chambers;
  • The decision on the method of designating a judge to replace a judge who is prevented from acting.

From 16 September 2025 to 31 August 2028, the General Court comprises ten chambers. Seven Chambers are responsible for cases relating to intellectual property law. Two of these seven are responsible for requests for a preliminary ruling. The remaining three are responsible for cases relating to the civil service.
