Within the framework of the Africa-Frontex Intelligence Community (AFIC), Frontex and Mauritanian authorities opened a risk analysis cell in Nouakchott on 20 September 2022. Risk analysis cells collect and analyse data on cross-border crime, such as information on illegal border crossings, document fraud, trafficking in human beings, and other types of cross-border crime, and they support authorities involved in border management. They are run by local authorities and trained by Frontex. The cell in Mauritania is the eighth risk analysis cell established under the AFIC network. The AFIC network (comprising 32 African countries) was launched in 2010 to provide a framework for regular information sharing about migrant smuggling and border security threats.
