At the beginning of October 2025, Frontex published its Annual Activity Report for 2024, outlining how the Agency worked with EU Member States, Schengen Associated Countries, and international partners to strengthen border management across land, sea, and air throughout the year. The report details Frontex’s support in areas such as training and capacity building, returns and reintegration, long-term capability development, and reinforced accountability. In 2024, Frontex coordinated 26 joint operations, including eight under the Frontex chain of command. Other key figures in 2024 include:

  • Frontex handled 1599 search and rescue incidents, assisting 65,919 migrants at sea;
  • Return and reintegration activities reached record levels, with a 40% increase in returns compared to 2023;
  • The EU Reintegration Programme expanded to 29 Member States and 38 third countries, equalling a 101% increase in reintegration cases.

In particular, the activity report highlights the following points:

  • Support of border security during major international events, notably the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in France and the UEFA EURO Football Championship in Germany;
  • Progress in capability development and digital transformation, including the adoption of the the European Integrated Border Management Intelligence Policy (marking a shift towards a more intelligence-driven approach) and the approval of the Capability Roadmap for the European Border and Coast Guard (setting out investment priorities).
  • Publication of the first-ever cross-border crime report;
  • Advancement of the automated border control, with the APP4EES mobile application successfully validated at Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) and Arlanda Airport (Stockholm), and development of the Travel2Europe app.

Cooperation with third countries remained a key focus. In 2024, Frontex conducted 13 EUROSUR awareness and capacity-building sessions, strengthening information exchange and situational awareness beyond the EU’s borders.

The report concludes with updates on internal controls, audits, environmental management and decisions of the Management Board, as well as on the work of the Fundamental Rights Office (FRO). In 2024, the FRO underwent a comprehensive internal review to enhance its methodologies and adapt to the Agency’s evolving structure. Frontex also formally established the Fundamental Rights Compliance Panel, further strengthening oversight and compliance mechanisms.
