Frontex and EUAA Sign New Working Arrangement
On 22 January 2026, Frontex and the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) signed a new Working Arrangement to support Member States by providing technical and operational assistance in the areas of migration, return, asylum, and reception. This enhanced cooperation also aims to support the implementation of European Integrated Border Management (EIBM) and the Common European Asylum System (CEAS), while improving coordination and information exchange.
This updated cooperation framework replaces the one established in 2012 between Frontex and the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), reflecting the EASO's replacement by the EUAA and the evolution of both agencies' mandates and activities. This agreement comes ahead of the application of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum on 12 June 2026.
Under the new Working Arrangement, cooperation between the two agencies will be strengthened in the following ways:
- Provision of more coordinated operational support on the ground, and alignment of activities such as screening and registration, asylum procedures, reception and return;
- Enhancement of systematic information sharing, including through EUROSUR, to support a common situational picture at the external borders;
- Development and use of shared analytical tools and operational products to promote consistent approaches across Member States;
- Reinforcement of preparedness by exchanging assessments, strengthening training and staff cooperation, and supporting the use of EU systems such as Eurodac.
Through closer planning and reinforced contingency measures, the agencies aim to provide more coherent EU support, avoid duplication, and optimise the use of resources. They will also collaborate closely with national authorities to implement measures related to the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, including the Screening Regulation, to support the consistent rollout of new screening rules at the external borders.
