Transposition of the PIF Directive into National Legislation

Annual Forum on Combating Fraud in the EU

Published 3 years, 2 months ago

Objective

Given the diverging national criminal rules concerning fraud and other illegal activities affecting the financial interests of the European Union and the divergence of sanctions among Member States, the 2017 PIF Directive seeks to harmonise the definitions, sanctions and prescription periods of the offences affecting the Union’s financial interests. Such a minimal harmonisation would also affect the effectiveness of investigations and prosecutions by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), considering that its competence is defined by reference to the PIF Directive and, therefore, to the different national legislations implementing it.

The deadline for the transposition of the PIF Directive was 6 July 2019. Since the PIF Directive is intertwined with the Regulation establishing the EPPO, this event will assess whether the objectives which the Directive sought to achieve have been fulfilled.

Key topics

  • Presentation of the key features of the 2017 PIF Directive
  • Focus on the transposition of the Directive in EU Member States
  • Experiences to date in various Member States
  • Case studies
  • Future synergies between OLAF and EPPO
