In the age of deepfakes and social bots, the criminal law protection of democracy and the constitution has become a highly relevant matter. At this year’s Freiburg Symposium on European Criminal Law, the results of a multi-year research project on this topic will be presented and discussed. Based on a comparative legal analysis of 14 European states, the European Criminal Policy Initiative (ECPI) has drawn up guidelines for a European criminal policy grounded in the rule of law, building on the group’s earlier work but further developing it with regard to this specific area of crime and the current situation.
These guidelines are based on the assumption that even the criminal law protection of interests that used to be purely national ones nowadays has a European dimension and can therefore, in principle, be subject to harmonisation by the Union.
The event is open for any colleagues and young researchers who are interested in this topical subject. The conference is free of charge, but registration is mandatory. The programme and registration form can be found here.
