Since 2016, this two-day seminar investigates current worldwide developments in extradition law and cases, including the European Arrest Warrant system.
The seminar is organised by Prof. Stefano Maffei, in cooperation with the international extradition group and ECCLE.
Key topics:
- Extradition basics (domestic and international regulations);
- Country reports on extradition law and practice;
- Case law relating to the European Arrest Warrant;
- How to challenge extradition requests and rights of fugitive suspects;
- Updates on notable pending extradition cases across the world (Maja T.; Carles Puigdemont, etc.);
- Unlawful and disguised forms of extradition.
How the seminar works:
Based on the expertise and inclinations of each year’s attendees, organisers design a series of closed-door working sessions in order to cover a relatively broad range of topics connected to extradition and the European Arrest Warrant mechanism.
The sessions are conducted through an innovative learning-by-doing style, which encourages discussions and inputs from all attendees. The sessions are strictly confidential and remote participation is not allowed.
What participants take home:
- In-depth knowledge of extradition and EAW law;
- Review of recent developments in extradition case-law (ECJ, ECHR and selected domestic Supreme Courts);
- A set of skills for extradition cases;
- A set of “lines of argument” for extradition cases; Useful extradition material, including cases, literature and samples of authentic EAWs;
- A network of colleagues expert in extradition-related matters.
Ideal for:
Criminal defence attorneys, federal and state judges, prosecutors, federal law enforcement, academic lawyers with an interest in criminal justice, human rights and comparative law.
